Perhaps a better word for some NLPers instead of a Supervisor is a Mentor. Someone to help you grow personally and professionally. The simple difference, a Clinical Supervisor (required for 10 hours per year for Clinical Members) is someone who is trained specifically to help mentor individuals and groups who work therapeutically with others.
Clinical Supervision in the field of NLP is quite uncommon, therefore the ABNLP is leading the trend to create a more unified practice and help clinicians to create a better practice for themselves and their clients. Supervision is essential for clinicians to:
Clinical supervision is an asset to a clinician and can result in an increase in your professional credibility. At the very least, undertaking supervision is an indication of your commitment to professional development and to providing your clients with effective and appropriate therapy.
ABNLP Supervision Requirements: Documented 10 hours of Clinical Supervision or Mentoring to be conducted by an NLP Trainer or Clinical Supervisor. 5 hours can be made from peer-group supervision.
Clinical Supervision is not common in the field of NLP - and is a beneficial part of building and maintaining a practice in the field of Coaching and Mental Health.
Supervision requirements can be conducted face-to-face, via the telephone, in group sessions or individually. Most supervisors will require some face-to-face supervision to physically meet and calibrate you as a clinician. Some supervision can be conducted by a peer or a peer group (for example meeting with other NLPers who also practice NLP as a profession or meeting with your NLP Trainer if they are not a clinical supervisor). These are also benefical ways to learn more.
The ABNLP condones the use of any NLP Trained qualified supervisor or NLP Trainer a member chooses. To aid members in finding a qualified supervisor, the following Registered Clinical Member are also qualified supervisors. You can also find qualified supervisors through the Australian Counselling Association, the Australian Hypnotherapy Association, PACFA and Psychotherapy Australia.
